SUPPORTING Student Agency
A self-directed learning centre for teens – an alternative to school

Teens Taking Control of their Learning
Imagine a form of education that….
…allows young people autonomy, prioritises their wellbeing, supports them to create their own unique paths based on their interests and strengths, incorporates real-world learning, and creates an inter-generational community where teens thrive.
Personalised learning is not what is done to the learner or about tailoring the learning. It is about helping each learner to identify and develop the skills they need to support and enhance their own learning so that agency and self-advocacy can be realised. – Kathleen McClaskey

Join
Become part of our student community.
Peers are very important in a teens life, as is a sense of community and belonging. Wheelhouse is a homely space where teens can meet other like-minded teens in an unpressured environment.
To join Wheelhouse, please book a meeting with us. We would like to chat with you and your teen/s to enable us to provide the best experience we can for your child, tailoring to their interests and needs.
Please email us to book a meeting.
Wheelhouse membership covers unlimited access to resources and workshops at the centre, as well as access to our vast network of mentors in the community.
Fees are $1250/term, with a sliding scale, as we believe Wheelhouse should be a viable
option for all families regardless of income level. Please email us for more information. We also offer a three week cooling off period just in case your teen decides it is not for them.
Teens are welcome to a free trial of the centre for up to three days.

Get Involved
Become a community mentor and share your passion with our youth.
Do you have a talent, skill or passion that you would be happy to share with interested teenagers?
Students learn best when they are learning alongside someone who is passionate and alive about what they are sharing, someone who is living and breathing what they are teaching.
We are always on the look out to expand our network of volunteer mentors along with the variety of types of skills/areas of interest available, to meet the varying needs of the self-directed learners.
Mentors can offer a one off workshop/talk or become a regular volunteer mentor depending on their own personal availability. The teens that attend your activity/presentation have chosen to be there and therefore are fully engaged and wanting to learn from you. It is a rewarding experience for both the mentor and student/s involved. Usually the number of students attending any given workshop/activity is small, allowing for an intimate personalised learning environment.
Please send us an email for more information. No interest/skill is too small for us, if it is an area of great joy for you, then it could be an area of great joy for our youth!
