How it Works

Wheelhouse opened it’s doors in term 3, 2023, and is open four days per week, 10:30am – 3:30pm. Students are not obliged to arrive when we open and leave when we close. Their attendance hours and days can simply work around which workshops they want to join, when they want to catch up with others, what works for families, and other commitments. Wheelhouse also offers excursions and events beyond our usual opening hours. Families are welcome to join these.

Families wishing to join Wheelhouse register as home educators to exit the school system and access our support. This will give you and your child the chance to think about how education can be shaped to fit them, with their interests, needs and unique personality. If you are currently home educating, the centre will be a great supplement to your education plan, providing inspiration, new opportunities and a sense of belonging with fellow peers for your child. If you are not currently registered to home educate, we are able to assist you with the process.

By choosing this path, teens can still do anything their peers graduating from school can do: travel, start a business, enter university, go to TAFE, get a job, take on an apprenticeship, and anything else life has to offer our youth. Often self-directed learners, who have had agency in their life for years leading up to graduation, are better equipped for this next stage in life, than their peers who are just entering the real world of freedom.

We offer weekly one-on-one mentoring meetings with each teen to help support them with their own personal goals and learning journeys.

Each family will have an in-depth meeting with us before becoming members. This helps us understand your child’s needs and will give us some early clues as to what resources and workshops are likely to engage them.

Membership fees are paid per term, and teens are welcome to three free trial days. We also have a three week cooking off period. We have a sliding scale for those who need it. The membership fees cover all resources, workshops, our extra-curricular program and connections to our mentors in the wider community. The fees remain the same regardless of how often members come into the centre. This allows everyone full flexibility to increase or decrease their engagement with Wheelhouse from week to week.

Please email us to book a meeting and have a tour of the centre.
